Social Media Literacy

How safe is your bio?

Activity Instructions: What happens to the information we put online about ourselves or our friends? Compare your bio on a social media platform (IG, Tik Tok, discord…) with three of your friends’ bios. You can write on a separate sheet of paper to record your results.

How much information about them can you find out from their bio? Their full name? Their birthday? Their age? What city they live in? Their phone number? Their SIN?! Place a checkmark next to their name below.
(PLACE ONLY THE CHECKMARK NOT THE ACTUAL INFORMATION).

Important forms given by the government (example: CRA) often request personal information. Based on what you know from your friends bio, arrange the bios in order of “safeness” – the safest should give away little to no personal information. See your data above to do this.

An unsafe bio gives away many personal details or private information, which would allow people to locate you/your friends or to forge your identity.

After completing this short activity, what have you learned if you give up too much of your personal information online? What are some ways to protect yourself from online identify theft, based on the info you have stored on your social media accounts? Describe 2 ways you might improve your digital exposure and footprint.
